If you’ve been wondering what you actually need to start a WordPress website, you’re not alone.
One of the biggest things I see with beginners is confusion around where to start. Domain? Hosting? WordPress itself? It can feel like a lot.
The good news is this. You only need three core things to get your WordPress website up and running. Once you understand these, everything else becomes much easier.
Below is a short training where I walk you through it as well.
What Do You Need to Start a WordPress Website?
To create a self-hosted WordPress website using WordPress.org, there are three essential components you’ll need:
- Domain Name
- WordPress Hosting
- WordPress Installation
Let’s break each of these down in a way that actually makes sense.
1. Domain Name (Your Website Address)
Your domain name is your website address. It’s what people type into their browser to find you online.
Think of it like your digital business address.
For example: www.ncdacademy.com.au
Domains are usually affordable, typically between $10 and $30 per year depending on the provider.
Choosing the Right Domain (Australia vs UK)
If you’re based in Australia, a .com.au domain is a great option. It requires an ABN and helps build trust with local audiences.
If you’re based in the UK, you might choose a .co.uk domain to show you’re locally based.
You can also go with a .com if you want a more global reach.
2. WordPress Hosting (Where Your Website Lives)
Your hosting is where your website is stored. It holds everything including your pages, images, files, and database.
Without hosting, your website simply wouldn’t exist online.
You can purchase your domain and hosting together or separately. Most beginners keep them together for simplicity.
Recommended WordPress Hosting Options
- Australian Hosting:
- VentraIP (my top recommendation)
- WordPress Hosting Australia
- Managed Hosting with Natalie Crowe Designs
- UK Hosting:
- International Hosting:

- SiteGround UK
- SiteGround AU & USA
3. Installing WordPress (Getting It Live)
Once you’ve got your domain and hosting sorted, the next step is installing WordPress.
Most hosting providers make this incredibly easy with a one-click install or guided setup wizard.
You’ll choose a username and password, and once it’s installed, you’ll be able to log into your dashboard.
Your login URL will usually look like this:
yourdomain.com/wp-admin
This is where you’ll manage everything on your website.
Can You Start a WordPress Website Without Tech Skills?
Yes, you absolutely can.
WordPress is just a tool. Like anything new, it can feel unfamiliar at first. But once you start using it and understand where things are, it becomes much easier.
You don’t need to know how to code. You just need the right guidance and a step-by-step approach.
