And how to build with confidence (without the tech stress!)
Building your first website can feel exciting… until you start Googling “how to build a WordPress site” and fall into a rabbit hole of plugins, themes, and jargon that makes your brain go fuzzy.
I see it all the time inside my FREE WordPress Help Hub — amazing small business owners, coaches and creatives, who are ready to show up online, but get stuck before they even hit “publish.”
So let’s change that.
Here are 5 common mistakes beginners make when building their WordPress website — and how to avoid them.
⚠️ Mistake 1: Skipping the planning stage
Jumping straight into picking a theme and creating pages feels productive — but without a clear plan, it’s easy to end up with a site that’s messy, inconsistent, or doesn’t lead your visitors anywhere.
✅ What to do instead:
Before you open WordPress, take time to define:
- The goal of your site
- Who it’s for
- What content you need
- What action you want visitors to take (e.g. book a call, sign up, buy, etc.)

⚠️ Mistake 2: Overcomplicating your theme
Many beginners start with a fancy-looking theme that’s too bloated or hard to customise — and end up feeling totally stuck.
✅ What to do instead:
Keep it simple. Start with a clean, lightweight theme (I like Astra) that’s beginner-friendly and easy to style.
Focus on making your site clear, readable, and helpful — not flashy for the sake of it.
⚠️ Mistake 3: Using too many plugins
Plugins can do amazing things — but too many (or the wrong ones) can slow down your site, create conflicts, or cause tech headaches.
✅ What to do instead:
Start with a few essentials like:
- A security plugin (like Wordfence or All In One Security)
- A form plugin (like WPForms or Gravity Forms)
- An SEO plugin (like Yoast SEO)
- A backup plugin (like UpdraftPlus)
Make a list of the plugins you’re installing and WHY?
Avoid installing random plugins just to “try things out” — trust me, your future self will thank you.
⚠️ Mistake 4: Not setting up your navigation
Many new sites skip over the menu — or stuff it with every page they’ve created. This confuses your visitors and makes the site harder to use.
✅ What to do instead:
Create a simple, clear navigation with just the essentials:
Home | About | Services | Contact
and ideally a blog page as WordPress is the best blogging platform and blogging is super helpful for your search engine optimisation.
Keep it focused, and guide visitors toward what you want them to do.
⚠️ Mistake 5: Trying to DIY everything without support
You don’t need to become a web designer overnight. And you definitely don’t need to suffer through it alone.
✅ What to do instead:
Find a support system — whether it’s a free community, a step-by-step course, or someone to guide you through the process.
I created my NCDAcademy WordPress101® programme for exactly this reason — to help non-techies like you build a beautiful, functional website without the stress.
